I consider art as a way to express an emotion or concept to an audience. It can be done through any sort of medium, but the artist makes a conscious effort to create “art.”
Nikki S. Lee is an artist who investigates and expresses the concept of identity through her photographs. Check out her two series: Projects and Parts.
The photograph below belongs to her more recent series called Parts. She is in every photograph, which is taken by someone else. She poses with a male companion, but then the photo is cropped so that you can’t see who it is. It tells a story and makes me want to know what is missing.
What really draws me in is that she breaks away from conventional photography. She is not the one standing behind the lens and capturing the shot, but she still manages to create a striking piece of art.

The creativity of Nikki S. Lee's work is fascinating.
Your yearning for deeper understanding of her photos really highlights the curiosity that "art" should evoke from a observer. From looking at her photo, I too am fascinated by a certain mysterious element that is evident by Lee's creativity in making the male unidentifiable.
