#1- Ashtin Charles: Untitled (Skull) by Jean-Michel Basquiat

I studied Basquiat for quite some time, mostly because my high school art teacher was really interested in his work and his approach to the art world. Basquiat was Andy Warhol's protegee for a while, until they had a bit of a fall out and Basquiat was exposed to the limelight. I also did not think that Basquiat was much of an artist because most of his works seem to be ramblings of his mind. Now that I am older, and out of high school, I can understand why this is art. A big reason that I can understand why this is art is because of this quote from Basquiat. He says, "I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life."

This painting, a mix of oil and acrylic paints, is all over the place, just like his mind probably was when he made this piece. I believe he may have made this when he started to experience fame and was struggling to keep tabs with Warhol. I love the wide array of color, and although it may be creepy to some, I find its beauty in its absurdity.
