Bruce Nauman is a sculptor, performance artist, photographer and filmmaker who currenty resides in New Mexico. Though he is known mostly for his neon sculptures, he frequently incorporates wordplay into other media. He emphasizes concept and meaning over aesthetics: "I'm surprised when the work appears beautiful, and very pleased. And I think work can be very good and very successful without being able to call it beautiful, though I'm not clear about that." His work in neon flamboyantly flashes words and images which appear whimsical and playful at first glance, but are deeply compelling upon further observation.
