Gus Wenner - Richard Serra

Richard Serra got by in his early twenties by working at steel mills.

This is a poster for a recent Richard Serra steel sculpture exhibit at the MoMA in New York City - clearly his work payed off. Serra is an American Minimalist Sculptor. His pieces are often large and overwhelming. I was in New York City during the time of Serra's MoMA exhibit; for about a week I saw gigantic slabs of steel tied to the back of 12 wheeled trucks slowly making their way through midtown Manhattan. Workmen would break down these slabs and transport them into the MoMA. When the exhibit was finally up it felt like magic. I could not help but feel absolutely unimportant when staring up at Serra's works.

(notice the people walking around)
