Kara Walker is a contemporary African American artist who is especially known for her large black cut-paper silhouettes that are put up directly onto the walls of galleries. Through her work, she explores gender, sexuality, race, violence, and other important themes.
Some of her artwork is shocking, graphic, and a bit disturbing, but they also have an underlying sense of humor. There is a lot of history embedded in her work as well.
I really like the silhouette form of her work. I think it’s really different than what I have seen and really brings something different to the table.
The following photos show examples of her artwork. The second one shows one of her galleries.
