Sorry I could not upload the stop-motion videos or the entire video...My final art project is about medical tools that do not function because of their materials, and how certain groups do not receive adequate healthcare.

A fake company, Medical Tools Remade Inc., designs health-care solutions for groups of people. They have designed a wooden stethescope for Illegal immigrants, since their studies show that 72% of illegal immigrants do not have a functional heart, only a cavity. Another innovation is the ceramic pill for non-english speakers since they can never seem to understand when and how many pills to take when they're told in English. Ceramic pills pass right through the body. So, you can reuse them and never over-dose! For the homeless this company has designed wire sutures. The wire sutures also double as self defense mechanisms.

Here are some images of my final project. The last one is a photo of the whole ensemble and the rest are close-ups (sorry, the quality of the photos isn't great!).
In this project, I wanted to explore the discontinuity between self, self-perception, self-projection, and others' perception of that projection. Each square is a self-portrait drawn in pencil, some with added elements of stitching and/or cloth, and they are all tied together with thread.

The following is my Light and Color project. The idea here was to take a painting that was heavily reliant on color (hence the choice of a Monet) and play with the color and lighting to try to create different feels and different effects. Then I decided to put them together into an Andy Warhol-like image with the different version lined up next to each other.

The middle image is an unmodified slide of the original painting, while the ones surrounding it are all modifications I made in photoshop. I tried to put them together in a way that created one completed image that was interesting to look at as a whole. So, I decided to make somewhat of a progression of colors going around the original. Then, to block out any potential background noise I placed a white border around it with some very simple text.

Note: Please click on the image to see the full size. Also, I added a black border so you can tell where the image stops.

Impossible project

When I read the headlines for an "Impossible" project, I thought of illusions, and I wanted to do something that experimented with perspectives, lights, and colors. Inspired by Patrick Hughes (see last vide) I decided to attempt some reverse perspective paintings. The process required quite some calculations and thoughts. So here is just a very very simple, basic version of a room:

So the painting is on a 3D surface and the end of the room is actually the part coming out of the frame in reality.

Material Alchemy - Ethan Cecchetti, Ashtin Charles

We made this out of nothing but construction paper, staples, crazy glue, and a little wire (around the center). We folded the construction paper into ninja stars of varying sizes. Then we rolled up a piece of paper to use for the trunk, and then we connected the stars to each other using staples and crazy glue and put them around the trunk.

Hopefully it looks like a Christmas tree.

Madeleine Filloux: Sculptures by Annette Messager

These are some really intense works by a French artist named Annette Messager. I saw an exhibit of hers at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Unfortunately, these images don't quite do her work justice. She makes a lot of puppet-esque sculptures and multimedia works many of which have moving parts.

This is a sculpture that uses pencils, gloves, and parts of stuffed animals:

This is an incredible installation I saw where a huge red cloth spills from the doorway and billows up to reveal grotesque, light-up stuffed animal-type objects underneath:

I think her work is very powerful and haunting. It also provides a good example of the creative use of everyday materials.

I had a bit of a fascination with the Seven Wonders of the world and the Seven Deadly Sins a few years ago. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were said to exist at some point in time, but they are long extinct as of now. It was said that they were elevated 75 feet into the air. Of course, it's mysterious quality lies in its ability to 'levitate.' This is why they have also been said to never have existed.

Isamu Noguchi started designing playgrounds early in his career, approaching this space as a potential for building a sculptural landscape. This one, erected in Atlanta (whatwhat) in 1976, is the only full playground that ever materialized. It's beautiful and specifically functional-- I think those orange traingles are swingsets. I might add that the play ground has started to rust and has acquired some graffiti over the past 30 years, but I think the aging process is pretty cool.

I have decided to post two music videos as examples because to me animation is much more than moving objects or illustrations. Music, and of great selection, the music selection is extremely important. Its amazing how a song can change the mood and theme of an animated work. The Cocorosie video is not conventional animation, but the images juxtaposed with the music selection is very alive and the use of various layers of moving images to create images is remarkable.

Over the weekend, I saw an art exhibition called Street Level in the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art. It consisted of work created by Mark Bradford, William Cordova, and Robin Rhode.

Robin Rhode's photography sequences and digital video animations caught my attention. I couldn't find a youtube video of one of the animations I really liked from the exhibition, but here is one of his works...

El Greco made this at the end of his life in 1610-1614. It depicts the Greek tale of Laocoon. Laocoon was a priest of Poseidon who advised his people not to accept the wooden horse from the Greeks. In the legend, Laocoon and his sons are killed by snakes sent by Minerva. This motif became popular after the discovery of a Hellenistic Bronze Statue of the same subject in Rome in early 1600's.
